Declined. Fraud Alert – Card Frozen.
Diane’s smile faltered. She pulled out the primary emergency card Ethan had given her and handed it to the waiter with a nervous laugh. « There must be some mistake. Try this one. »
The terminal beeped twice. Card Blocked. Contact Issuer Immediately.
« Let me call the bank, » Jason muttered, pulling out his cell phone. He dialed the customer service line and spent ten frantic minutes waiting on hold, listening to automated menus before a stern representative finally came on the line.
« Sir, I am showing that all supplementary cards linked to the primary account holder, Ethan Miller, have been permanently frozen and flagged for unauthorized use and severe financial discrepancy, » the representative said coldly. « Furthermore, legal proceedings regarding the misappropriation of funds have been initiated by the account holder. Have a good day. »
The line went dead.
Jason lowered his phone, his face completely drained of color. He looked at Diane and Brooke, who were staring at him expectantly.
« Well? » Diane demanded, her voice rising in panic. « Did it go through? How much do we owe for the cabana and the lunch? »
« The cards are blocked, » Jason whispered, his voice shaking. « All of them. Ethan froze everything. He’s… he’s locked us out. »
Brooke stood up so fast her chair screeched against the concrete. « What do you mean he locked us out? We’re in Mexico! How are we supposed to pay for the hotel rooms? How are we getting home? »
Before anyone could answer, a resort manager accompanied by two security guards approached their table.
« Excuse me, Mr. and Mrs. Miller, » the manager said politely but firmly. « The resort has just received notification that the payment method for your extended suite bookings has been declined and invalidated by the cardholder due to reported fraud. Unless alternative payment is provided immediately, your access keys will be deactivated, and you will be asked to settle your outstanding balance or vacate the premises. »
Panic erupted at the table. Diane stood up, her face turning crimson with rage and disbelief. « Do you know who we are? My son is Ethan Miller! He makes a fortune! This is just a misunderstanding, he loves us, he would never do this to his own mother! »
« Ma’am, » the manager replied, his expression hardening. « Your son just called us directly ten minutes ago. He stated that you have no authorization to use his accounts, and he advised us that you are entirely on your own. »
Back in Chicago, the house was warm, quiet, and filled with the gentle breathing of a sleeping baby.
Ethan sat at the kitchen table, finishing a cup of coffee. His phone buzzed continuously with blocked calls from his mother, frantic texts from Brooke, and angry voicemails from Jason demanding to know how they were supposed to catch a flight home without money.
Ethan did not listen to a single voicemail. He did not reply to a single text.
He simply blocked their numbers one by one, closed the app, and turned his phone face down on the table.
Claire walked slowly out of the bedroom, leaning against the doorway in her soft pink cardigan. The color had returned to her cheeks, and the haunted look in her eyes had finally vanished, replaced by a quiet, steady peace.
Ethan stood up immediately, walking over to wrap his arms gently around her, careful not to press against her healing stitches.
« They’re stranded in Mexico, » Ethan said softly. « And when they finally figure out how to get back, the locks on this house will be changed, and my lawyer will be waiting for them at the airport. »
Claire rested her head against his chest, listening to his steady heartbeat. For the first time since Lily was born, she felt completely secure.
« Thank you, Ethan, » she whispered.
« Always, » Ethan answered, kissing the top of her head. « It’s just us now. And we’re going to be fine. »
