He understood exactly what they were saying.

But he also knew that I had spent most of my life trying to keep peace in my family. He loved me enough not to make the evening more difficult.

As the wedding approached, my parents increased the pressure.

Mom warned that I might spend my life compensating for everything Luke lacked.

“What exactly does he lack?” I demanded.

She reluctantly answered.

“Education, ambition, and social confidence.”

“Luke owns a successful garage, supports himself, and treats people with more dignity than most of the men you admire.”

She insisted that one day I would become embarrassed when he could not keep up with my world.

But my family never asked what kind of life Luke and I were creating together. They only judged what they believed he could provide for me.

When Luke proposed, Dad asked whether I was truly willing to throw away my future on a man who spent his life beneath cars.

“I’m marrying someone who understands what things—and people—are worth,” I replied.

Our wedding was small and simple.

Luke’s friends moved chairs, his customers brought food, and his coworkers treated everyone like family.

My relatives smiled for photographs, but their expressions changed whenever the camera turned away.

Near the cake table, Alison warned that I would eventually remember how I had been raised.

“That is exactly what I’m afraid of,” I told her.

Then a young server dropped a tray, sending glasses across the floor.

Luke immediately crouched beside him.

“Don’t touch the small pieces. You’ll cut yourself.”

Alison watched them and said coldly, “Some people simply aren’t trained for anything better. His mother knew how to make herself useful in other people’s homes. At least her son learned a trade.”

Luke became completely still.

I demanded to know what she meant.

Alison admitted that his mother had once worked for people our family knew.

But the expression on Luke’s face was not surprise.

It was recognition.

“Not here,” he quietly told me.

He remained calm through the rest of the reception, but after we returned home, he walked into the garage and came back carrying an old metal box.

“I need to show you something,” he said.

PART 2: THE SECRET INSIDE THE BOX
The box was scratched and rusted around the corners.

Luke placed it on our kitchen table and rested both hands on the lid.
