Classic Creamy Rice Pudding

This traditional rice pudding is a comforting, slow-cooked dessert with a soft, creamy texture and gentle sweetness. Made with simple pantry ingredients, it can be enjoyed warm for a cozy treat or chilled for a refreshing, make-ahead dessert. The pudding thickens naturally as the rice releases starch into the milk, creating a smooth, custard-like consistency.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup long-grain white rice
Long-grain rice holds its shape well and prevents the pudding from becoming overly mushy. Medium-grain rice can be used for a slightly creamier texture, but long-grain offers the most balanced result.
  • 4 cups whole milk
Whole milk provides richness and body. For a more indulgent pudding, replace up to 1 cup of milk with heavy cream or half-and-half.
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
Adjust the sugar slightly depending on your desired level of sweetness.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
A small amount of salt enhances the sweetness and balances the flavors.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Vanilla adds warmth and depth to the pudding and should be added near the end of cooking for best flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
Cinnamon adds subtle spice and pairs beautifully with milk-based desserts.
  • 2 large eggs (optional)
Eggs create a richer, more custard-like pudding. This step is optional but recommended if you enjoy a thicker texture.
  • 1/3 to 1/2 cup raisins or other dried fruit (optional)
Raisins, chopped dates, dried cranberries, or golden raisins add sweetness and texture.
  • Ground nutmeg (optional)
Nutmeg is commonly used as a garnish and adds a classic finishing touch.
